(NECN: Amy Sinclair, Portland, Maine) - Greg Brooks has spent the last 25 years searching the seas for sunken treasure. But it turns out this Portland, Maine based treasure hunter gives as good as he gets.
The Sea Hunter is a salvage ship accustomed to adventure on the high seas.
Well-known treasure hunter Greg Brooks is her captain.
But the crew's next adventure won't net them a dime. In fact, they'll probably lose money, because they're setting a course for earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
This is a relief mission. Brooks is using the 220 foot long Sea Hunter to help a people he grew to love during his many trips to Haiti.
The sea hunter can hold a million pounds of cargo, so Brooks is encouraging the public to bring donations down to the fish pier in Portland where's she's tied up through Wednesday.
And long before the scheduled drop off time began, cars and trucks started rolling in.
Food, toys, medical supplies, anything Mainers could think of.
This isn't the first time Brooks has used his resources to help out in a crisis. When Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005 he used a smaller ship to take down several hundred thousand pounds of supplies.
And Brooks says that experience taught him a valuable lesson
He figures it will take them six days to travel to Haiti at which point they'll hit cities along the coast.
Brooks says the crew's renegade spirit may even work to their advantage.
Whether it's bottlenecks or bureaucratic red tape, brooks says they're prepared to get the job done.
While this mission won't line Brooks’ pockets, it will do his heart and Haiti a world of good.
