(NECN: Josh Brogadir, Stoneham, Mass.) - The family of Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan is dealing with a personal tragedy. Kerrigan's father died over the weekend, a death police say came just moments after he had a fight with one of his adult sons.
We've seen several cars coming to the Kerrigan home tonight.
A few still remain in the driveway next to the house - where the alleged domestic dispute happened.
Another hardship has afflicted the family of Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan.
Her 70 year old father Daniel is dead and Middlesex County investigators have charged her brother Mark with assault and battery against someone over age 60.
It all happened early Sunday morning at the family home at 7 Cedar Avenue in Stoneham, Massachusetts.
"In speaking with the defendant, he indicated that he in fact had an argument with his father, that that argument became physical, that he grabbed his father around the neck and at some point the father collapsed to the floor," said Elizabeth Keeley, Middlesex County Assistant District Attorney.
Mark Kerrigan, 45, closed his eyes and looked up, then put his head in his hands and wept at his arraignment Monday morning in Woburn District Court.
He then pleaded not guilty.
"He denies responsibility for this. He is quite distraught about his father's death. He is grieving," said Denise Moore, his defense attorney.
It was unclear exactly what kind of an argument went on early Sunday morning, but police say Mark Kerrigan was uncooperative and appeared intoxicated when they arrived.
He told them his father wouldn't let him use the phone.
He said when his father fell to the floor that he was "faking it."
A short while later Daniel Kerrigan died at a local hospital.
"Mr. Kerrigan was an outstanding man. If you look in the dictionary to see what a man was, that's what Mr. Kerrigan was. The family's just a beautiful family," said Kerrigan family friend Jim Day.
"He's down to earth, loving, caring, helping in every single way. That's all I could say. I'm very very sad and shocked that this happened to him," said neighbor Theresa Rafle.
Mark Kerrigan, whose bail was set at $10,000, was led out of court in handcuffs.
Prosecutors say he just finished a two and half year jail sentence for assaulting his wife and moved back in with his parents in November.
His sister Nancy, the 1994 Silver Medalist, was seen leaving her parents' home at 2:30pm Monday afternoon.
In a well-known case, Nancy Kerrigan was assaulted back in 1994 a month before the Olympics.
A funeral mass for Daniel Kerrigan is Thursday morning in Stoneham.
The Middlesex DA's office says, "the cause and manner of death is being determined by the Office of the Medical Examiner and the M.E. indicates that his final determination can be expected to be released within a couple of weeks."
